Do you remember when 1999 became 2000?
I still recall that disorienting sense of anticipation and threat that seemed to hang over the world. All my friends were planning parties to celebrate the new millennium, but who could tell whether the world as we knew it would still be here in January?
Personally, I could never quite believe a two-digit date code would bring about the downfall of civilisation. I was more in the ‘new millennium brings new possibilities’ camp. Certainly the music was sounding more upbeat and (in my mind at least) people seemed happier in those last months of 1999. It was a heady time.
Where were you in the doom vs boom camp? Did you feel anything had changed once the clock ticked over at midnight on 31st December 1999?
My novel, Remember My Name, relives this era from the perspectives of two people who needed all the luck they could get.

Sheri Starling works at Sephryn House, a friendly inner-city massage parlour, and dreams of a better life. But how can someone with little education and a sheltered upbringing expect anything more than life at the dark end of the street?
Danny Mills fled from home when he was 14 and now lives on the street – or at least he does until Sheri invites him to move into her spare room.
As the Year 2000 approaches, Sheri hopes the new millennium will turn her life around. And how right she is … but not in the way she was expecting.
Why am I offering free downloads of my book?
Remember My Name explores notions of morality, equality, family, friendship, charity and greed. It encourages us to live in hope, no matter how dire things might seem.
My own philosophy is closely aligned with these themes. I’ve recently led gender equality, diversity and inclusion programs – and to be frank, things haven’t improved a whole lot since the turn of the century! So I’m hoping to do my bit in making this a better world.
